H—Help Them Believe

Mark 29:4 (NIV) “I believe; help my unbelief!”

At some point, an unchurched person needs to cross the line from unbelief to belief. This is the point of spiritual conversion. The person has heard the claims of the gospel. The Holy Spirit has awakened him or her to the reality of sin's guilt, the expectation of God's judgment upon sin, and Christ's death on the cross as the only means for obtaining God's forgiveness.

Scriptural Examples

1. On the Day of Pentecost, Peter helped his hearers cross the line of faith.

Acts 2:37-38 (NIV)
³⁷When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"

replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus
Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of
the Holy Spirit.
2. After Saul's encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus, Ananias
helped Paul cross the line of faith.
Acts 9:17-18 (NIV)

¹⁷Then Ananias went to the house
and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the
Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent
me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." ¹⁸Immediately,
something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got
up and was baptized.
3. Peter helped the Roman centurion, Cornelius, cross the line of faith.
Acts 10:44 (NIV)

⁴⁴While Peter was still speaking
these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
4. The Apostle Paul helped the Ephesian disciples of John the Baptist
cross the line of faith.
Acts 19:4-5 (NIV)

⁴Paul said, "John’s baptism
was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming
after him, that is, in Jesus." ⁵On hearing this, they were
baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
